Using the Digital Portfolio in Moodle (Moofolio)

Use Firefox as browser – IE portfolio screens do not scroll properly. Safari has some problem also.

The Portfolio block is added to courses or added at the server level to all student home pages or course pages (as a sticky block).

All users see their own "My Portfolio" and teachers also see "My students’ portfolios" link

Can create Portfolio Views – these act as groupings of artifacts and can be used however you desire (maybe by grade or by subject or by standard) – you can have as many views as you want but each school should have standards and discussion about how you want to handle across team/grade/school/district. The “My Portfolio” view always displays all artifacts sorted by last updated date.

Express Yourself option allows a web page layout for the portfolio view page to allow students more flexibility and freedom to layout a pleasing presentation page for their portfolios.

Artifacts are listed by subject / last access date

Add artifact – students should upload/enter own artifacts – if teachers or staff needs to assist with this process, they should logon as the student. 3 options to create an artifact:
  • Add a submitted moodle “assignment” (within Moodle system)
  • Add online text – student enters text directly into Moodle screen
  • Upload an artifact file

Admin maintains the list of subjects (same for entire server)

Change appearance – backgrounds, colors, fonts – setting this for each artifact makes the Portfolio view page more appealing.

Student Reflection – says create when no reflection is there yet, otherwise portfolio view says view or edit – teachers can modify student reflections if needed

Teacher Reflection – says create when no reflection is there yet – students cannot update teacher reflection

Files - Maximum file size for uploads determined by the Moodle server administrator (10Mb in SAU16). Standards for file types should be set. Any type of file can be uploaded – docs, pdfs, audio, video, flash, etc. but standard file types should be established by the tech. staff at your school to ensure compatibility.

Artifacts can be locked by teachers – maybe after term or year ends

Keywords can be used to search – project title, competency, etc

Admins can define, load and view test scores Publishing feature – default is locked down (student and teacher view only) but if opened then can be viewed by school or public

Burn to DVD is an option that is currently in development and planned for the next release of Moofolio

Test scores can be loaded from a spreadsheet by the server administrator – viewable by student or teachers

Artifacts can be locked by teachers – perhaps after a project is complete or at the end of the year.

File Cabinet is part of Moofolio but can be used as a separate block if desired – provides a great way for students to share files between home and school.
