We
recommend a Linux server but Moodle will run on other platforms. You
need Moodle version 1.6 installed and then you can install the
Portfolio block.
If a student
changes
schools, does their portfolio follow them?
Once
the student is enrolled in Moodle, their portfolio stays there. Each
year new teachers can review their portfolio. At SAU 16, we separated
our Moodle servers by K-8 and 9-12.
How is
the portfolio organized?
The
default "My Portfolio" can be used as is or subportfolios can be
created however you decide to organize your student portfolios at your
school. There is currently one level of subportfolios.
Is
File Cabinet / FileKeeper a separate
plugin?
File Cabinet (formerly known as FileKeeper)
is the required code behind the student portfolio for storing and
retrieving data. FileKeeper is not separate from the portfolio but
could be used outside of the portfolio for file storage and
retrievability from home.
How long does it
take to train teachers?
Teachers
can be trained to use the portfolio in an hour. Schools/districts
should determine file formats, portfolio organization, rubrics, etc.
prior to training teachers. Students should be the ones loading the
artifacts and creating reflections. Then the teacher can do their
reflection. The SPDC offers more extensive training in the course
development aspects of Moodle.
Is
SPDC offering space for schools and districts to use for portfolios?
No
- we do not have the infrastructure that would be required to do this
outside of our district.
Do
students need to be enrolled in a course?
You
do not NEED to enroll students in courses, but we advise that you setup
courses by teacher and enroll students so that teachers can work with
their subset of students - otherwise teachers will have to work from
the list of ALL students.
Can
reflections be changed?
Students can go in and change prior
reflections but students cannot change teacher reflections. Teachers
can change student and teacher reflections. The reflections
and
the artifact can be locked/unlocked by the teacher. While
locked,
the student could not edit the reflection.
What
kinds of files are
supported?
Any
type of file can be uploaded to Moodle or Moofolio as long as the file
size is within the limit set by the system administrator. It is
recommended that you determine a standard list of file types for your
school so that files can be accessed over a long period of time and on
any type of computer.
Should I upgrade Moofolio to version 1.7 (February 2007)?
We
recommend you skip version 1.7 and wait until 1.8 if you can. Then
upgrade Moodle to 1.8 and then the portfolio to 1.8. The student
portfolio 1.8 version works but the Moodle 1.7 has issues that 1.8 will
fix.
